ABOUT CONNOR DOUGHTY

BIOGRAPHY

I was born on the 30th of May 2003, in the historical splendour of Lincoln and was raised in a local dainty village not far from. For a brief 6 years of my childhood me and my mother (who married a fellow in the army) moved around A LOT! I lived in Germany for 2 years and was around the midlands of the UK for the other 4. What an adventure! however I do remember it being pretty desolate around the areas, we were pretty much just surrounded by gates, fences, buildings, tanks, and long empty fields, not much to admire - until we moved back to Lincoln! Which left the rest of my childhood growing up in the countryside of Lincolnshire I was raised tending to my family’s 11 horses, since then I always had such a strong connection to the world around me. Through my school years I was always known as “the Artist” as I could always draw things extremely well from eye, however lacked the confidence to further my practice more than just simple line drawings, and I was PETRIFIED of paint.

Once I started at college, I really started to hone in on producing tonal drawings and toward the end I finally developed the confidence to even touch paint! Little did I know it’d become one of my favourite mediums to use. It all started after I watched the famous Television artist Bob Ross, his teacher Bill Alexander, and his crew of phenomenal TV instructors, however there was one instructor who I had admiration for and who really made an impact on my artistry and that is Buck Paulson. I was so infatuated by the way Buck made it all look so easy and look so realistic, he just wowed me in every stroke. Little did I know he would become not only a great friend of mine, but my mentor. Someone who guided my practice, helps me reinforce it and someone who is full of such divine wisdom – what an incredible character!

My practice now heavily consists of Landscape, Seascape, wildlife, still life paintings and Monochromatic drawings of a vast variety of things. They tend to be stills of movies or portraits of characters. My painting practice has a fairly interesting process, my pieces tend to be influenced by ideas I create pre-emptively on panels they are called Pochades they are simple little paintings done with a palette knife which helps me create a basic understanding of what I want to create, i'll then transfer it onto a larger canvas and do a basic painting. Or I tend to do an acrylic wash of random colours on a canvas and see what I can create or envision and work further on it with oils.

Some of my proudest moments so far as an artist include: me currently working with 2 famous actors from the film series The Texas Chainsaw Massacre which we are producing 74 limited edition autographed pieces of my drawing for people to buy! I also sell my work at Chewton Glen the 5-star hotel which I’m currently a part time house keeper for, it’s a nice place to show my work and have people express their love for the pieces they see in the boutique. I now reside in Hampshire, UK where I’m currently studying at Solent university where I hope to further enhance my fine art studies.

ARTIST STATMENT

My art work as varied as it all is focuses on one common variable and that is the ability to present vitality within, whether that be the power of light and dark; the power of a wave; the power and grasp the piece holds on YOU. Vitality has always been an important role in art so why stop now!

I don't like to confine or define what kind of artist I am, as growth is an important part of being human - so my work tends to focus a lot around how I'm feeling. All of my paintings are done from within, no references just me and a blank canvas - which allows me to be utterly free with no shackles. My drawings on the other hand do use movie stills which allows me to capture horror as I see it, and how I am feeling at that moment.
